Try as I might to avoid the reality…the riding season is soon to end in this part of the world. The autumn colors are slowly giving way to the winter months to come.
The wee and I found our way out to the rolling hills of Dufferin County and the last bits of fall's glory. The air was clean and crisp to match the clear skies above. With the grip heaters set to low it was a perfect afternoon to bimble along.
A recent software update for my iPod sent it off on it’s own journey. Finding every single song I’d ever downloaded from Steve’s jukebox…ever. Paying little mind to what the device was up to I placed it into my pocket and off I went. Pressing the button on my helmet the tones welcome my commands. Pretty cool. I say “Play Music…” and almost immediately the music fills my bucket an added feature to an already perfect day.
Having not paid any attention to what the iPod had found on its earlier unsupervised musical recovery I was at the mercy of whatever was to come. Piero had used my iTunes account to grab some Canadian rock n roll, which seems to be missing if you sign on to an iTunes account in South America. With his strong ties to Canada I was only too happy to help a friend out. I was now enjoying some of what he’d selected. Nice. Then comes Andy Williams. Yes, Andy Williams. Not really music from my generation but rather something I’d downloaded for my Mom’s visitation. It was a piece of music of great significance to my parents. As I reached for the button to skip the track I paused and decided to let it go. While this song couldn’t have been a bigger 180 from what I was just listening too the importance and memories came racing back. The ideas of what this meant to my folks made me smile.
I found myself brimming with things to be grateful for in that moment. I’m healthy, I’m free, I can go where I want when I want and that’s just a small start. I was grateful for my time with my Mom and the good fortune that brought my parents together in the first place. Never ceases to amaze me how powerful a simple song can be.
Sometimes you have to just let go…let iPod.
