I traded two wheels for four paws this past weekend. I spent the weekend at my sister’s cottage up on Lake Huron. Just me and her dog Sydney who I often refer to as “my favorite nephew”. Laura and her family were off for a weekend in New York City and I was asked if I’d like to look after the pooch. Any time with this dog is a good time.
Looking after Sydney is about as labour intensive as trying to maintain consciousness on a shade covered hammock on a breezy summer afternoon. This guy is quite frankly better behaved than most people I know. He doesn’t want to highjack a conversation or tell you what you are doing wrong or argue over directions. He simply wants to be there. I’m convinced that he tries his level best to understand what you are saying to him. His confirmed vocabulary is limited to Timbit, Treat, Walk, Car, Go and Do You Wanna…” Really when you think about it what else do you need to know?
I arrived at the cottage to note telling me to help myself to what ever I wanted. There was beer in the fridge; cigars on the table and a bit of Johnny Walker Red should the mood strike. I found it interesting that Laura was thanking me in this note. Imagine being thanked for spending a weekend in one of your favorite places with one of your favorite people err DOGS!
Our weekend revolved around naps reading and eating. A very simple recipe to help press that reset button we all have. The weather chased us inside many times as Lake Huron served up her best in summer storms. One bright flash out the window alerted me of what was next. I placed my arm around Sydney just in time. An almighty crack of thunder directly over the cottage rattled the windows and shook the walls. Sydney stood up and turned around to flop almost right in my lap. While I love a good storm…the dog didn’t share my view and was sticking close.
Laura could bill me for this weekend and I’d happily pay it. Peace and quite, the beach, the fresh air and the magic that is a cottage in summer time. Cap that all off with a great companion and I can’t think of a better way to restore some good.
I think Sydney should take me for a walk now down the beach road. I’ll get my leash.
He's looking forward to it again!
