A few months ago I really started to seriously consider something way out there. Something different and something I’d never done before. In light of some recent events the idea of “someday” evolved into “…if not now then when?” I think sometimes we make the mistake of taking time for granted. There will always be a next year, next month, next week, tomorrow or even later this afternoon. Truth is what we have is now. Having said that, thanks for sharing your now with me by reading this.
The consideration was a big bike trip. Really big. Something that would test me and my ability along with the machine. Influenced by those who have and those who wish they had I’m off in a few short days. The journey takes me from the comfort of my home to the uncertainty of the unknown and a very dynamic timeline. When the Wee rolls out of the garage this Saturday morning there is no hard fast destination, there is no schedule, we’ll just point west and start riding. I’ve not been able to determine if my feelings are nervousness or simple excitement. I suspect there’s a blend of both. 9000kms or so over a few weeks alone is a big trip.
In the planning, I decided to try and do some good along the way. I took on a cause and the notion of raising money for something I really believe in. I decided that I could raise $2,000 for Riders for Health. They use motorbikes to deliver medical aid to remote locations in Africa. They save lives by getting the drugs to those who need them so much. At home we just go to the drugstore. In most African countries that’s not a option.
The response to this is beyond anything I ever dreamed. My goal has moved four times in this portion of my journey and now stands proudly at $8000. Today I’m within $900 of my goal through the simple kindness and generosity of friends, family and colleagues. So many have stepped forward to lend their support and make a contribution to this effort. To say I’m moved would be an understatement. It’s humbling and wonderful all at once. Together my team has taken big steps to a brighter day for those who’s future seems so dark.
While I speak of tomorrow…be thankful for today.
Thank you to every supporter of this journey.
