Get'in School'd

I’ve always been impressed with watching people who know what they’re doing do what they do.  Things like Carpentry, cooking, mechanical things and most recently motorcycling. Yesterday I joined my friend John and his son for a day of touring down near Port Dover, Ontario and beyond.  These guys are real riders.  I’m looking at 3 and half months and over 13,000kms and feel pretty good about it and what I’ve learned. Yesterday was like another training course all on it’s own.  To watch two people so entirely comfortable and confident is really inspiring.  John’s son can slalom his bike at 100km/h like a Mogul skier.  I’m talking fast and almost by means of some bizarre metallic telepathy.  I see what I’m seeing but I don’t really see how he’s doing it.  Honestly, this kids good. Natural and comfortable and a really bright guy.  During breaks on our tour I would take the opportunity to talk to the kid about what he’s doing and how he’s doing it. It’s brilliant.  At the same time I remember when I was the kid…not anymore and I’m ok with that.  Even John on the big Victory, a long heavy cruiser, carved along the twisty roads with seemingly no effort at all. The Wee and I spent the entire day chasing those two all across southern Ontario.  The value in it is the knowledge that they represent.  Kind, patient and always willing to help out with advice based on their experience and ability.  That’s a great resource and one that’s tough to put a price on. I guess sometimes I get lucky in those people who have become friends.

I’ve got a long way to go to get anywhere near this caliber and doubt I’ll get to the level they’re at.  Never the less, it’s nice to have people that bring out the best in you.  Those are people you should hang around with.
